Counselling groups LGBTQ+

Do you have experience of intimate partner violence? Do you identify as LGBTQ+? Do you wish to share your experience with others and to hear about other’s? Fempowerment offer counselling groups for women, trans and non-binary people who relate to the description above.

The violence within LGBTQ+ relationships can manifest in the same ways as in heterosexual cis-relationships, with the difference being that your gender and/or sexual orientation can be used against you. An example of this is when your partner threatens to “out” you to others or that you may experience double isolation due to the violence and their LGBTQ+ identity. The reception from society can also differ a lot which affects your possibilities of reaching out and receiving the right support.

In our counselling groups we create a safe room for the participants to learn about the violence and to share one’s experiences. We listen to you and to each other without judgement or disbelief – with openness, support and a sense of community being central aspects. You will also receive evidence-based knowledge about intimate partner violence and its mechanisms, which creates a larger understanding of its consequences.

The counselling group consists of a total of seven occasions. We meet once a week from 6 pm to 8 pm. Every occasion has its own theme:

  1. Getting to know each other
  2. What is violence?
  3. Normalisation process & Minority stress
  4. Leaving
  5. Sexuality
  6. Self-care
  7. Closure and the future

Each occasion has a break included and the groups are led by social workers with adequate knowledge and experience with psychosocial work and LGBTQ+ matters. The meetups take place in our offices in Kungsholmen, Stockholm.

Starting in spring of 2023.
